Native Plants: The Beautiful Foundation of a Healthy Ecosystem
Heartwood Nursery is one of the largest native wholesale and retail nurseries in the Mid-Atlantic region. We’ve been propagating and growing natives for over 35 years as an early leader in native species in the horticulture industry.
Ninety percent of our plants are indigenous to the Eastern Piedmont region, and grown by hand, without pesticides. We offer over 300 native species, most of which we start here in our greenhouse from locally collected seeds and cuttings. We also carry a small percentage of select non-invasive, non-native species.
At Heartwood, you’ll find common and lesser-known native trees, including American Hollies, Serviceberry, Pawpaw, and many others. You’ll also find a vast selection of native shrubs, perennials, berry plants, groundcovers, ferns, and grasses.
Heartwood: A National Leader in Hollies
Heartwood Nursery is a national award-winning propagator of Holly and the largest propagator of American Holly (Ilex opaca) in the United States, starting and growing over 20,000 American Hollies per year. We also propagate select non-native Hollies for the Nursery Trade and retail market. Our stunning grove of mature Hollies is a Holly Society of America Certified Arboretum and Test Center.
