Education is a big part of our mission. We host public events throughout the year to help everyone learn about, grow, and celebrate native plants. In addition, we welcome community organizations, schools, homeschools, and other groups to contact us for private tours of the nursery.

Autumn Walk on the Tree Trails

Join Heartwood owner Sue Hunter and the Farm and Natural Lands Trust of York County for an enriching autumn walk through the trees here at Heartwood Nursery. Learn about:

  • Fall native plant identification

  • Best trees for erosion control and stormwater management

  • The science of why leaves change color

  • How trees in the fall predict spring

lIex opaca ‘Indian Steps’

Few trees can rival the stunning beauty of our native evergreen American Holly, Ilex opaca. For thousands of years, hollies have played a role in numerous cultures. Discover how Hollies have been the source of legends, lore, superstition, medicine and magic. Please join us in learning more about York County’s most infamous Holly, Ilex opaca ‘Indian Steps’, in a talk with Heartwood Nursery owner Sue Hunter. Sue is currently president of the Holly Society of America.

The Holidays at Heartwood 

If you love the natural beauty of the holidays, make Heartwood Nursery your first stop for celebrating the season of light. Bring friends and meet new friends at our festive wreath-making workshops! Join a walk and talk in our Holly grove and behold this beautiful nature-nourishing species in its glory. Events take place on eight dates from November 22 to December 14. For locally made decorations and gifts, shop our Holiday Open House, November 29-30.
