Native Plants: Healthier for the Natural World in Your Yard

With a dedicated team of horticulture experts, we strive to offer a wide variety of plant species to meet diverse landscaping needs. Our nursery is a great place for inspiration and learning about the benefits of incorporating native plants into your surroundings.

By planting native trees, shrubs, and perennials, you help our environment not only today, but for future generations. Because they have evolved as part of a native ecosystem over hundreds of years, native plants:

  • Provide nutrition and habitat for birds, butterflies, bees, moths, and other wildlife. Nonnative ornamentals can’t provide this.

  • Better tolerate drought and extreme heat.

  • Help filter rain into the ground through their strong root systems. This reduces flooding and lessens pollution in streams.

Native plants also:

  • Add natural beauty to any yard or garden across the seasons.

  • Are often easier to grow than nonnative ornamentals.

The Heartwood Difference

Great Selection

Retail Shop Gallery

At Heartwood you’ll find both common and less known trees native to the eastern Piedmont and transitional regions, including Hollies, for which we’re nationally known, as well as serviceberry, pawpaw, and so many other native trees. You’ll also find a vast selection of native shrubs, perennials, berry plants, groundcovers, ferns, and grasses.

We have great options for sun, shade, dry, and moist conditions that work beautifully in formal and informal designs. Sizes range from 3 to 5-gallon nursery trade containers. (Note: Not all species are available in all sizes.)

Expert Propagation

At Heartwood, we know natives from the inside out and ground up, because we propagate 90% of our native trees and shrubs from cuttings and seeds from our own nursery stock. Most other garden centers aren’t propagators. Learn more our plant propagation.

Heartwood native plants are straight species. They haven’t been genetically manipulated to change their appearance, the way cultivars are. At Heartwood, when you see a plant tag with a name in quotes, this means the plant is a selection from a naturally occurring population. The name is the name of the selection: it often reflects a characteristic or other noteworthy information about that particular plant.
