Native Plants: Healthier for the Natural World in Your Yard
By including native plants, you add rustic natural beauty to your yard and garden across the seasons. In addition, you help our natural world. Because they've evolved as part of a native ecosystem over hundreds of years,
-
Native plants provide nutrition and habitat for birds, butterflies, bees, moths, and other wildlife. Nonnative ornamentals can’t provide this.
-
Native plants better tolerate drought and extreme heat.
-
Native plants help filter rain into the ground through their strong root systems. This reduces flooding and lessens runoff pollution in streams.
See our plant list, and contact us or visit us in beautiful rural York County. We'll help bring your vision of ecofriendly natural beauty to life.

The Heartwood Nursery Difference
Extensive Selection of Straight-Species Native Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Berries, and More

At Heartwood you’ll find both common and less known trees and shrubs native to the mid-Atlantic region. We offer hundreds of species, from American Holly to Witchhazel. You’ll also find a vast selection of native perennials, berry plants, groundcovers, ferns, and grasses.
Offering great options for sun, shade, dry, and moist conditions, our native plants meet a range of landscaping needs and are beautiful in formal or informal designs. Sizes range from 3- to 5-gallon nursery trade containers. (Not all species are available in all sizes.)
Heartwood Nursery native plants are straight species. They haven’t been genetically manipulated to change their appearance, the way cultivars are. At Heartwood, when you see a plant tag with a name in quotes, this means the plant is a selection from a naturally occurring population. The name often reflects a characteristic or other noteworthy information about that selection.
Expert Sustainable Propagation
At Heartwood, we know natives from the inside out and ground up, because we propagate 90% of our native trees and shrubs from cuttings and seeds from our own nursery stock. Learn more about our plant propagation.
