Wholesale Growers to the Trade and Retail Sales to the Public

Heartwood Nursery spans 70 acres. The land has been preserved since 2011 through the Farm and Natural Lands Trust of York County, protecting it from future development. A thriving native ecosystem supports wildlife and abounds in natural beauty at Heartwood.

Heartwood Nursery

A 35-acre tract of mature hardwoods is left untouched to continue to naturally grow. The remaining 35 acres are planted with nursery stock, native fruit orchards, and display gardens for our customers. Our wholesale and retail propagation facility is here too.

The Hollies

Our beautiful grove of over 300 mature Hollies is a Holly Society of America Certified Arboretum and Test Center, one of only 14 in the United States. American hollies (Ilex opaca), which is a haven for flocks of robins and hundreds of pollinators.

The Pollinator Meadow

Our large pollinator meadow is filled with milkweed, dogbane, asters, goldenrod, bluestem, and fescue. A hay field long ago, the meadow self-seeded and reestablished from existing roots in the soil. We’ve never used pesticides or herbicides to maintain it, simply mowing it every year or two to help reduce invasive species. Not only is the meadow beautiful year round, it hums with life, providing food and habitat for birds, insects, bats, and other wildlife.

Serviceberry Grove

A grove of over 225 mature native Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis) trees forms a stunning allée and formal orchard. Recently planted orchards include the Pawpaw orchard, planted 3 years ago, and the Persimmon orchard, planted in spring 2024.

Wildlife Hedging

We also provide habitat through hedging—piling cut and fallen tree branches along the border of our stand of hardwoods. In addition, stormwater management best practices are in place to reduce soil erosion and runoff pollution in the local creek.

We offer public tours of Heartwood throughout the year.
